This is one of the earliest photographs the moon as seen through a telescope. Taken by astronomer Maurice Loewy (1833–1907) and his assistant Pierre Henri Puiseaux (1855–1928) this plate is part of their ambitious atlas of the moon which was published in 1910. Composed of 10 000 photographs, L’Atlas photographique de la Lune was the basis for lunar geography pretty much until people landed there. This view of the craters Copernicus, Kepler and Aristarchus is one of the most visually beautiful sections of the moon and was photographed – according to the data on the print – on September 29, 1896 in Paris.
