French neo-impressionist painter Henri-Edmond Cross (1856–1910), like his contemporary Vincent van Gogh, was greatly influenced by Japanese art. This playful interpretation of a starry night from 1905–08 draws on that influence. The contrast between the softly-textured shadowy landscape and the stabbing latticework of the nighttime sky helps to create a dreamlike feeling.
