This photo was taken by the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter, a satellite orbiting 250km above the surface of Mars. The rays around the edges of this crater are places where sand has collapsed to the crater floor where windswept dunes have formed. This tiny crater – about 1km in diameter – is located right just south of the Martian equator in a region called Meridiani Planum.
